At ALBA, flour forms the base and quality ingredient for unusually good slices of sourdough pizzas. During flour production, spelt bran emerges as a by-product which consists of discarded grain parts like husks. It is often used as animal feed, can be added in small amounts as a dietary supplement, and more recently also finds application as disposable tableware. In this collaboration, spelt bran — sourced from ALBA's small, local producer "Altbachmühle" in Switzerland — takes on a different role: Here, it's the key component for a limited number of wall sconces, exploring the by-product's potential as a natural resource for new biomaterials.
